ruairi calcabrina is the second born son of the calcabrina family. his older brother, emmerich calcabrina, is the heir. effectively, this means ruairi is able to enjoy the comforts and opulence of being born to one of the most powerful families in all of the styx — without the responsibility that comes with managing its day to day affairs. instead, ruairi owns his own nightclub — known as "the eighth circle," it's a place where demons and humans alike are invited to lose themselves in pure, selfish hedonism. it also serves as an effective front to lure intoxicated humans into selling their souls for further luxuries — who needs a proper afterlife when the party can go on forever?all ruairi needs to do is look pretty and keep his name out of the tabloids — he can spend centuries coasting by on pure nepotism. a playboy. a scoundrel. the spare heir.however, ruairi has never been satisfied with simply being emmerich's backup. he has ambition and calcabrina pride — yet nowhere to direct it. or rather, he didn't prior to meeting abbel. the alichino and calcabrina families have been bitter rivals for countless generations. abbel quickly proved themself to be a prodigy in their particular line of business. intentionally, no doubt; they were oziel alichino's perfectly crafted little weapon. it sparked an idea that very quickly turned into an obsession — if ruairi could obtain more souls than abbel, outsmart abbel, prove he was better than abbel, his family ( as well as the rest of the malebranche ) would have no choice but to give him the acknowledgement he so desperately craved.

( some may prefer to seal deals with a handshake; others prefer a written contract. ) a soul can only be surrendered willingly; a demon can never take a human soul without explicit consent. souls act as an immense source of power and are used by the malebranche to keep styx city running — quite literally, in fact.a human without a soul is known as a "blank," and can never cross the styx into the afterlife proper. they will remain trapped in the city until they eventually lose all sense of self and fade away.emotion consumption incubi and succubi draw energy from intense emotions in the environment around them — much in the same way an extrovert might feel energized in social settings, though to a far more literal degree. while they also require physical sustenance in the form of food, in times of famine they can go far longer without than other species due to their peculiar dietary requirements.fire resistance incubi and succubi are incapable of being harmed by flame. they are still vulnerable to suffocation via smoke inhalation, but their flesh will not burn.

despite their inability to utter a single lie, abbel alichino still manages to be a complicated person nonetheless. though they maintain a polite, pleasantly cordial exterior, it often leaves a distinctly artificial aftertaste — like the honeyed speech of a politician. ironically, their calm and palatable persona can often be to their detriment; it has the unfortunate side effect of making abbel appear apathetic and insincere — particularly when it doesn't falter even in situations where politeness would be considered inappropriate. their perpetual honesty also has a tendency to make them speak quite bluntly — a jarring contrast when one actually pays attention to the words coming out of their mouth, rather than the polite tone they are spoken in.while they don't necessarily hold any ill will towards humanity, they lose no sleep over trading in their souls — likening it to the actions of a carnivore consuming meat for their own survival. it is only through the collection of human souls that styx is able to maintain some semblance of order, after all.

abbel alichino is the heir of the alichino family: a powerful demonic lineage spanning countless generations. in the sprawling city built alongside the styx ( a purgatory, where deceased humans toil to purchase their ferry ticket to the afterlife ) they can be considered something close to royalty. they are the youngest heir in the malebranche — a conglomerate of twelve demonic families that collectively rule over the city. it would be naive to view their age and relative lack of experience as a weakness, however; abbel has garnered a reputation for being as shrewd in business as they are downright ruthless. though they cannot lie, they are clever enough to weave contracts and make deals with humans, effortlessly coaxing them into trading their souls in exchange for various comforts the alichino family can offer.they were adopted by the head of the alichino family, oziel alichino, when they were still a child; the finer details surrounding their adoption aren't widely known. oziel alichino has no biological children and abbel is distantly related to him through their ( deceased ) mother, noel.
